When I described the plot to my husband, he joked, "Oh, you're reading a polisci romance!" Which it kind of was, but it was also so much more: it was an emotionally intense romance between two smart, driven people. I really liked Millie as a heroine: she's brainy and kind and thoughtful and determined to move out of her comfort zone, or at least to try to. Parker I was initially a little skeptical about (experience has made me wary of cover-model gorgeous males) but his willingness to make himself vulnerable to Millie, and to let her know he was crazy about her, was very attractive and won me over. Plus, honest to god, it's great to read about a Democratic hero. (Too often romances gloss over political stuff in order to avoid offending anyone... but here politics are part of their core identity... and a smart liberal guy is sexy). The tension and the emotional intensity between Millie and Parker felt real. There was one line that really struck me, where Millie was talking to her best friend about him... and was asking herself if they made each other better people. She gave this serious thought... she knew Parker made her feel giddy, that they were super-attracted to each other, but were they good for each other? In the end, Barry made me believe they were better together.Tags : Special Interests (The Easy Part Book 1) - Kindle edition by Emma Barry. Special Interests The Easy Part Book 1 edition by Emma Barry Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I really enjoyed reading this book. I loved the dynamic between Millie and Parker and seeing how their relationship evolved.
Fantastic political romance that was a joy to read.
Zippy prose, fantastic characters I want to have a drink with, and a great plot-- this book is marvelous! I didn't want it to end. Emma Barry is a fantastic writer and I look forward to reading more.
Check out her period romance novel, Brave In Heart, to see the versatility in voice. Beautifully written and lyrical. Can't recommend more highly!
This is different from the usual political or romance novel. The characters' evolutions were inspired, and I was hooked by the third chapter. It is obviously an early novel because there are some pacing issues and such. However, the writing and the thoughts conveyed are intelligent, so I am confident that she will only improve. There are some typos (Parked for Parker), but the grammar is excellent. I am on to book 2!
Warm, smart, witty romance set in Washington, D.C. - I absolutely loved this book. The hero and heroine in this book are as obsessed with politics as they grow to be obsessed (in a good way) with each other, and I loved watching their debates, where they challenge each other to grow as people and as politicians (working behind the scenes) and to take the risk of real vulnerability in their relationship with each other. Their banter is so much fun, I kept on finding myself with a huge grin on my face as I read - I was just having such a good time.
I fell head-over-heels in love with this book, and I bought the next book in the series (Private Politics) before I'd even finished this one. Emma Barry is my favorite new-to-me author discovery in a long time! (Probably since Laura Florand. And I'd recommend this book to fans of Laura Florand or Julie James!)
I had a "special interest" in this book, as I used to work in politics myself, and I am now living in the DC area. So I was prepared to pick it apart, as novels written in your field or your location are usually less than convincing. But I was very pleasantly surprised, and found myself really loving the characters, both of whom were totally believable as a congressional staffer and a union lobbyist.
These characters had unexpected layers Parker's relationship with his grandfather was particularly poignant. And Millie suffers from PTSD, a result of her recent kidnapping. As their romance developed, the two characters revealed depths not often found in a contemporary romance. They both had reservations about their relationship--not a "big misunderstanding" but honest, brutal truths two people who work for sometimes opposing political forces would surely experience. I loved seeing their relationship develop, like normal relationships do, in fits and starts no quick romp in the sheets or insincere vows of commitment here. When Millie and Parker finally got together, the reader really felt they had earned a happy ending.
I was also intrigued by the political subplot that anchored the storyline--again, quite realistic and based on the real-life stalemate that is modern American politics. This author got her facts right, unlike some who write political fiction.
If you loved West Wing and mourned its demise, you'll love Special Interests--it could have been one of the many plots that meandered through the episodes. And Aaron Sorkin himself couldn't have written more clever dialogue!
A slow burn romance that I really enjoyed reading. It was a nice departure from the "insta- love" types of romances that are so popular and really unbelievable. I was also pleasantly surprised that the lead male (Parker) was the one who took his time and played hard to get with somebody he really liked - to make sure she (Millie don't call me Amelia) really liked the "real" him before they slept together. The leads, Parker and Millie were fully developed characters, likeable, believable and interesting people together and separately. I also thought the B plot which was about the happenings, the motivations and thought processes of some of our most cynical and idealistic power brokers in D.C. was a good story as well. Well done Ms. Barry.
