You know how every once in awhile you come across a treasure that just delights you? I'm not what you would call a "horse person" by any means. I don't often have occasion to be around them. But I love stories written by compassionate people who love animals. Reading this book was a super treat. I was moved and encouraged by this real American story.What has stayed with me most after reading Horse Wisdom Alchemy is the honesty and courage of the author. How insightfully attentive the author has been throughout her life. That may have been a survival skill as she grew up, never knowing what to expect, or where she stood. Ryan is able to put feelings into words. I, as many of us, could relate to her vivid descriptions of a childhood confused. Confused by the irony of living in an emotional mansion with a disappearing floor. Setting out into the world could have easily had dire consequences but Ryan somehow transcends her experiences into wisdom and never loses her joy and wonder. Along the way horses have played a pivotal role in in Ryan's life. Each with their unique personality, they have been friends, guides, and teachers.
It doesn't surprise me that Ryan became a marriage and family therapist with her unique ability to be present and really listen. And, after all she has been through, I admire her desire to give back and the hard work it took to educate herself . How she has built a practice incorporating the intuitiveness of her beloved horses is an amazing story. There's a fascinating history here through generations. Horses have been interwoven with the American experience for a long time. Now, by allowing them freedom to be their (literally) un-bridled selves, Ryan helps others to discover their answers within.
I highly recommend Horse Wisdom Alchemy and look forward to this author's next book.

Seldom do I come across a book that I cannot put down since there are so many out there to temp me. Normally I can pick up a book and start reading it, and then put it down and pick up another. If the new one is better, the other book gets the boot.
This book was one of ones that took precedence over other books I was reading for many reasons. For one, the author tells very engaging stories with each chapter a gem in and of itself. Two, the author does not hold back. We live in a time of political correctness that is almost oppressive. Political correctness has come to mean censorship and does not come close to its original meaning in this decade and it's almost as if we are going back into the dark ages. Why should we not bring up the inappropriate family member or family friend? I think Katie Ryan is onto something here as she delves quite thoroughly into the lives of her family and her own life. There is a big white elephant in the room with alcoholism and it destroys families. Someone needs to discuss it. Also, the poignancy of the stories are like no other I've read. Get ready with a box of tissue if you can relate to horses and the bitter sweetness of a horse and human relationship. This was a life changing experience for me and a gift.
Well, I finished the book tonight (a very good sign that I couldn't put it down).

This book is filled with raw emotion and precious memories. There were many reminders for me of being in the moment with our four legged soul mates and allowing things to happen. The gentleness of Katie's experience with Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, both in her professional life and as a client, is truly inspirational. Even though this is Katie's personal account, one who practices psychotherapy and equine assisted psychotherapy can easily relate.
The chapters on the Powerhouse fire moments got my adrenaline going as I remember that situation all too well.
Truly an amazing story of a woman's life in the company of horses.

Horse Wisdom Alchemy is a surprise. I wasn't sure what to expect, especially with the glossary, the almost technical paper feel to it, and the unusual (for a novel) formatting (double spaced/no chapter numbers). What I discovered was a sensitive and well thought out accounting of a life lived with insight, passion and, of course, horses. The book is fast-paced and a very compelling read. There is a lot more going on beneath the surface of this book, which makes it an excellent read.
a very disappointing read. From the intro I read via sample on kindle, thought it was indeed going to be about the way horses transformed the life of the author. Also since she states in her credentials she works in the field of EFL type work, I had high hopes. Well, not really.
The book tells you a lot about the authors' father and his favorite horse, who her parents' best friends were and what horses were riding in parades in her hometown. A boring read and hardly anything about alchemy with and through horses.
Fantastic read !!! I have a new understanding of horses and appreciation for how important they impacted her family's life . I cant wait to read Katie Ryan's next book
