There is a fable about a man who finds a snake freezing in the snow. The snake begs to be taken and warmed up, and it promises the wary man that it won't bite him. The man picks up the snake and warms it--and the snake proceeds to bite the man. When the man protests, the snake tells him, "You knew what I was when you picked me up."What does this have to do with this book? I saw it advertised as a free download as "young adult paranormal romance." I was skeptical, but there have been some very good YA series lately, and I've been enjoying modern fantasy. So I thought I'd give it a try. Well...I knew what it was when I picked it up.
It wasn't a particularly bad book, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd been hoping. For me, there were several aspects I found somewhat off-putting:
- The almost stereotypically teenage "no one understands me, because I won't tell them what's wrong, because they wouldn't understand me if I did" that characterizes the main character. If she had tried talking about what was bothering her and gotten rebuffed, it would have been easier to swallow, but in this case, I just wanted to slap the protagonist and tell her to get out of the pity party.
- An uneven characterization of some characters. One character, for example, is portrayed as being a responsible twenty-something member of a security firm...and then turns around and trades barbs with his older brother about wearing "big boy pants." Many of the adult characters spoke and acted as though they were college frat boys. (To be fair, I think that the author's characterization of the protagonist's father was much better done.)
- A slow start to the book. I understand that the author was trying to set the scene, but it felt like it took too long--and involved too much wallowing in the main character's self-pity--before anything really started happening.
- Lots of dangling plot threads. Granted, the book had no pretenses about being #1 of a series, but it wasn't just the series plot that was left untidy at the end; other aspects felt like they just got ignored in the rush to finish.
- Some choppy writing. I know it's not going to be Shakespeare, but the writing could have used more polish. It's easier to ignore when the plot is drawing you along, but especially in the slow opening, I noticed every missing comma, dangling participle, mismatched pronoun, and overly colloquial prose section as I tried to keep momentum going. Once the plot picked up, it was easier to get past this, but I struggled with it for a while.
However, I did also appreciate several aspects of the book. It was nice to see a supernatural-based book that wasn't drawing on the two and a half big things that are big recently (vampires and zombies, and werewolves somewhere in the background). Once the plot did get moving, it was more engaging. There was enough intrigue in the book to keep me guessing as to where things were going as the ride picked up.
So...overall, it was a pleasant enough read. But I had my doubts going in, and I'm sure now, having finished--I just wasn't the target audience for this book. That's fine, and I can see that a lot of other people really enjoyed it. It doesn't make it a bad book, just one that's not for me.

I was really interested to read Smokeless Fire one being that it's written by Samantha Young who's stories I have come to love and two it's about Jinn's. Not to many paranormal books that involve them so I was excited to get pulled into their world which is so different from the typical angels, vampires, demons, zombies and so on that I've been reading about.
Ari is your average high schooler, she's not sure about what she wants to really do, has a friend named Charlie who is her best friend but their relationship has been strained ever since his little brother was killed and his been off into drugs and hanging around the wrong group of people, and she has a father who is not the best father in the world. Then on her eighteenth birthday she ends up being thrown into a different realm, Mount Qaf where she meets her real father the White King and discovers that she is a full blooded Jinn and not just any Jinn she is the Seal the only being that can control any Jinn including the most powerful one Azazil the father of all the Jinn Kings.
Ari was for the most part likable she is at first in denial and doesn't want anything to do with her real heritage but having the swoon worthy Jai Bitar her 24/7 guardian around doesn't help. At times I found her a little annoying because I just wanted her to get over it and embrace who she is especially after being told how important she is to the balance of things. And she is constantly chasing after Charlie who yes you do feel sorry for but he wasn't that great of a friend to her for two years and then he goes and does something pretty selfish.
Then there is Jai, he is not just the swoon worthy guy that just happens to be there no he has his own demons that he is battling and by far the most interesting character. He is in his twenties I believe twenty-three was the exact age and it shows. He is much more mature then Charlie and just downright bad-ass.
Overall this was a great take on Jinn's, the ending was a little sudden so make sure to have the second book ready to go. I've already read the second in the series which i'll have a review up for soon.
Maybe this book is for teenagers? I could not relate and keep myself interested. The main character is weak and whines the entire book. Constantly. It’s annoying. I didn’t even finish the book. She apparently can command supernaturals to do anything she says. But, she just can’t seem to remember what she is supposed to do?!? I just wanted to scream “talk stupid! How hard is it to talk?!? Oh, and spoiler- she is in love with a drug addict that treats her like crap and is trying to use her but she just can’t see it- even though everyone else can, but she won’t believe anyone. Ugh. I kept wanting to give this book a chance, I listened to the entire book until the last 15 minutes! Then it was like “nope, it never did get better” and I gave up.
