Ghostgirl Mercy Series Book 1 eBook JB Salsbury

This was a very sweetly written YA novel. I actually really enjoyed it. I never read YA and had I been warned, I would have skipped it. Secretly, I'm so glad I didn't pass this one up.

However, and this is a big deal to me, there was zero warning about this book ending on a cliffhanger. I can not stand when readers aren't warned that they are only buying half of a book. Not only that, but no mention on when book 2 will be out, so I've lost my momentum of wanting to wait around for part 2. Had this info been provided then this would have been a 4-star read.

If you don't mind it being YA (no sex scenes, though a heavy make-out session) and ending on a cliffhanger than definitely go for it!

Ghostgirl Mercy Series Book 1 eBook JB Salsbury Reviews

An original plot line, complex characters, and twists and turns to drag you in to the story, Ghostgirl, is its own brand of romance and mystery. Milo and his brothers have been living in a foster home since the disappearance of their mother and the escape of their crime lord father. Milo has a plan to finish high school, adopt his brothers and move on with their life from his previous affiliations. When a quiet girl with a mysterious condition and an even more mysterious past, Milo's beliefs will be tested and pushed to the limit.

Mercy, aka our Ghostgirl, is albino and her strikingly pale skin causes her to be a beacon for trouble. Milo doesn't trust Mercy at first but is intrigued by her for some unknown reason. As he fights his pull towards her, Milo manages what months of therapy for Mercy could not; he begins to break her out of her quiet shell and delve into her traumatic past. As more layers of Mercy unveil themselves, Milo sinks deeper under her spell and falls for her. When chaos strikes and Mercy's belief in her "powers" come to light and threaten everything Milo holds dear, these two have to fight everything they've feared to find a way out.

I cannot express how much I love this story. So unlike any other new adult romance, Ghostgirl pulled me in from the start and never let go. I love that the main point of view is Milo's as it allows us to become invested with him and his brothers before we truly get to know Mercy. Milo also doesn't have this immediate attraction to Mercy; as he learns more about her he begins to see her in a new light. This slow burn was completely satisfying as their feelings developed alongside the story. Pieces of Mercy's past slowly come out as the puzzle of what truly happened to her begins to form. Navigating the past with the struggles of teenage life and Milo's dangerous family history made a story full of twists turns that I am BEGGING Salsbury for more!
An extraordinary girl who longs to be ordinary.

The tagline on the cover of GHOSTGIRL is the perfect description. It sums up a book, that is almost impossible to give justice with words in one sentence.

I'm going to do the best I can to explain what this book meant to me, without giving away any spoilers. ;)

Mercy's life as she knows it changes in the blink of an eye when she wakes up in a psychiatric facility. Questions come to fast, and answers she gives make it obvious that she was not raised in a traditional sense. Being led to believe she's something much more than the "ordinary" girl she truly is. Her outward appearance, though beautiful, is different. So when she winds up at a foster home that includes three other fosters whom have problems of their own, her world is flipped upside down and life lessons of the everyday teenager come at her faster than she can sometimes handle. She wants to blend in, wants to belong, but beliefs and teaching ingrained in her from childhood keep knocking at her mental door.

Milo, the eldest of the three boys at the same foster home is son to a notorious Latin American gang leader. The one who should rise up to be the next "king." But when opportunity strikes, and he's able to free his brothers from the chains that bind him to the life, he takes it. Which means it's time to clean up his act and set the example for his younger siblings. That's how Milo Vega ends up a twenty-year-old high school senior, covered in tats, and working as the school janitor. Gotta do what ya gotta do, right?

Ok, so here's the skinny... When you take these two, Milo and Mercy, two souls - VERY unlikely to ever cross paths in reality, what happens is nothing short of divine intervention. This book isn't just a story. It's a journey of learning and healing and breaking down walls that both of them have built. It's incorporating themselves into a world neither ever thought they would live in, and following rules that hadn't applied before. On this journey, Mercy and Milo hit a lot of bumps, but to see these two work through friendship and eventually find love is an experience that will leave your heart pounding and hope rising.

It's beautiful and honest and when put to the test, it withstands the beatings. I hope if you're reading this review, you'll go and grab this book, because I can guarantee, that you'll be getting something you haven't read before, and when you finish, you'll be rooting for this couple and begging for more.
