Coming Home Rosamunde Pilcher 9780340752470 Books

I've enjoyed every one of Rosamund Pilcher's novels I've read, and I own several copies of her books for the joy of re-reading them. "Coming Home" is, in my opinion, the very best and most satisfying. The plot is the story of the life of a typical English daughter of parents who live and work in a far country of the British Empire. It is a life of separation from family, of boarding school, of making lifelong friends. The plot takes us through the sacrifices and gallantry of the British people through WWII. The characters are richly drawn with warmth and intimacy. The fact that the heroine Judith Dunbar inherits a small fortune and her closest friends are wealthy is probably not typical. However, Judith is a brave, unassuming, intelligent girl who accepts her life as it comes to her. This novel gives us an amazing peek into the lives of the upper class British as they faced the evils of WWII and its aftermath.

Coming Home Rosamunde Pilcher 9780340752470 Books Reviews

What a lovely book! One rarely gets to read a book like this today..Mostly because no one is writing them.
The characters were almost believable and all had redeeming qualities. I really found myself caring about them and worrying about what was happening.
The descriptions of Cornwall and London and the insight into the minds and moods of the people who were on the edge of unfathomable changes were compelling. For a few days I felt myself to be in the company of friends in a welcoming t and interesting ime and place..
It was more than just a romantic novel.
I cannot recommend it more.
I love this book so much. I got it when it first came out many years ago because I am a big Rosamunde Pilcher fan. I read that hardback book at least three times before it split in the middle and got too hard to hold. Then, I picked up a copy of the paperback because I wanted to read it again. I read it once, but the print was too small (eyes are getting old!) and again, it was too hard to hold. Then I got my and bought the Edition. At last! I could see the book clearly and holding it was so comfortable!

The story is just as enchanting as ever. For a synopsis and more description, you can read the other reviews of this book. My review; however, has to do with the many typos in the book. They are inexcusable. If I didn't know the story then in some cases I am certain that I would not have known what the author was talking about. Granted, it's a huge book and might be difficult to convert over to the edition, but there should not be that many typos. I am giving this five stars for the story, and taking one off for the typos in the edition. But don't let this deter you! It is a wonderful, wonderful book and one of my all time favorites.
LOVE LOVE LOVE I couldn't put this down at night! I have never been to Europe, but through Rosamunde Pilcher's beautiful, crafty and very clever ways of allowing you into the lives of her characters, I can almost smell those ocean. To picture the houses, elaborate or tiny cottage be it, it's as if you can feel the warmth or cold in the room. I love the people she creates, honestly... they become so real and so intricate in their own personality.
I struggle a bit with rating this only 4 when truthfully it's 4 1/2! Loved the beginning and hated it when I felt all the changes coming on with the war. I really did NOT want to read a war story. Yes, I knew the years and I knew it was all mostly during WW2 but somehow hoped it would not be so in depth. That was pretty ridiculous on my part because it could not tell the story without the depth of the reality. Long story (literally) which for the most part kept me engaged. There were some lulls for me when I struggled to get back into it and where I felt she gave too many details. All in all though I enjoyed it! On to the next....
I read several Rosamunde Pilcher books, including "The Shell Seekers" when I was in my thirties. Now, I am 60 and have re-read and read previously unread of her writing. "Coming Home" is my favorite, second only to "The Shell Seekers". I love the character development and the way that even the more flawed characters are written in a way that allows empathy and compassion. Additionally, the characters grow with consistency based on things happening in the story. I very much dislike when a character behaves in an unbelievable way in order to further a story and so I appreciate the realness of Rosamunde Pilcher's characters.

This book was not only a wonderful story of people I grew to care about, but I also learned much I did not know about the war and post-war. The setting is so beautiful also - part of the joy of reading Rosamunde Pilcher is the background scenery, homes and gardens. I will read this one again even though it is a difficult time period to read about.
I love reading Rosamunde Pilcher, as her characters are very well drawn, and the story lines are very real. Her descriptions of the scenery and villages, bring wonderful memories of my youth which was spent in England.
This particular story, reminds me of the Downton Abbey saga, in that it starts out just after the first world war, and progresses through to the end of the second. There is a good mix of upstairs and downstairs characters, and though a little predictable, was still a wonderful read.
Coming Home is my all time favorite book. I read it when it first came out, put it away and re read a few years ago. Have it in paperback hard cover and on my nook. About what it was like for a young woman growing up and coming of age during WW2. Zinc England. This was during my mother and father's time. No one writes the way Rosamund Pilcher does, although I have managed to find a few such as Marcia Willett and Maeve Binchy. Would give anything to find more like them. No they are not (literary masterpiece's) but we'll written beautiful story's. Proving that you do not need bad language, sex or violence.
I've enjoyed every one of Rosamund Pilcher's novels I've read, and I own several copies of her books for the joy of re-reading them.
